NOTE: This position is expected to work approximately 10–20 hours per week.

            

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

The Fall Student Intern – Commissioners’ Office provides a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in local government, public policy, and community engagement. Interns will work directly with staff on a range of administrative, research, and outreach projects. This will provide an opportunity to learn more about county functions and engage with work in the community.

DUTIES:

  • Conduct research and/or analysis on specific projects or priorities, as assigned.
    • Examples of special projects: affordable housing research and community outreach, strategic plan data review, grant opportunities, community grant research
  • Draft briefing memo on assigned project that outlines findings and/or outcomes.
  • Attend public meetings, community events, and internal briefings as appropriate and available during tenure.
    • Examples: BOCC business meetings or study sessions, budget presentations, department briefings, etc.
  • Organize and maintain any research, records, and databases.
  • Deepen understanding of County functions and responsibilities.
  • Present findings to relevant staff in formal presentation.

Education and Experience:    

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Studying political science, public administration, communications, or a related field

 

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position.

  • Spends 50% of the time sitting and 50% of the time either standing or walking.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 20 lbs.
  • Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 20 lbs.
  • Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing office or work duties.
  • Verbal and auditory capacity enabling constant interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, and similar; and in public meetings and personal interactions.
  • Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or equipment.
  • Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work-related equipment.
