GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
This is a temporary position serving as a subject matter expert in the area of Traffic Operations. This position provides expertise on traffic operations best practices and provides consultation in achieving operational and strategic goals of the Traffic Operations Program.
DUTIES:
- Serves as a subject matter expert for traffic-related issues and devices, including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
- Provides support in troubleshooting traffic signal and ITS devices, device communications, and network connections within the County’s existing traffic signal fiber network.
- Conducts analyses and makes recommendations for ways to achieve goals related to the County’s Traffic Operations Program. This may include recommendations related to new ITS systems or other technology to improve the traffic signal fiber network.
- Provides support to the Traffic Engineer in evaluation of systems engineering for ITS devices and Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) software. Makes recommendations for improvements to the system.
- Provides training to staff on ITS and other traffic-related devices.
- Conducts research on new developments and technologies in traffic control systems. Prepares reports of findings and recommendations.
- Helps to prepare presentations/other documents that will be used by decision-makers and/or to educate the public on traffic devices and/or changes to traffic systems.
- May perform duties as a backup to the Traffic Engineer or Traffic Engineering Technician as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
- Knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of traffic and transportation systems.
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to traffic systems operations.
- Knowledge of the Manual of Uniformed Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Highway Safety Manual.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate traffic and other statistical data and develop recommendations.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in traffic or transportation engineering or a related field is preferred.
- At least five (5) years of relevant work experience in traffic operations and/or transportation systems is required.
- Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:
- Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.
- Possession of a valid Class “R” Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is generally confined to a standard office environment, although some field /out of office observation/inspection work will be expected. Occasional exposure to hazardous road conditions and weather elements may be encountered while in the field.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Spends 70% of the time sitting and 30% of the time either standing or walking.
- Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 20 lbs.
- Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 20 lbs.
