NOTE: This position has a schedule of Monday - Thursday, 10 hours each day.   

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Performs skilled mechanical and technical work and preventive maintenance of light, medium-duty and heavy trucks, earth moving equipment, construction equipment, agricultural tractors, snowplows, dump trucks, variable message boards, mowers, paint truck and anything else required by County personnel.

DUTIES:

  • Use electrical diagnostic and mechanically calibrated equipment to make adjustments and repairs to fuel, ignition, and emission systems to bring them within manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Prepare interim records of work performed and parts used on all equipment repaired. Use County computer system to prepare records of work performed and parts used on all County equipment repaired.
  • Mount, balance, repair, and replace tires ranging from automotive to heavy equipment tires.
  • Operate gas or arc welding equipment, a variety of hand and small power tools, a metal press and/or a metal lathe to repair and/or fabricate parts and tools necessary to maintain County vehicles.
  • Perform both minor and major preventative maintenance
  • Make safety inspections on any/all County road equipment.
  • Performs diagnosis and repairs in the field.

REQUIREMENTS:

Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

  • Knowledge of the techniques and procedures related to the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines and the tools and equipment required for that repair.
  • Skill in recognizing and reporting faulty and abnormally functioning diesel and gasoline-powered equipment, hydraulic systems, tires, tubes, and wheels.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computerized inventory and fleet management software.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment for self and others.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Vocational courses in automotive or heavy truck mechanics highly desirable
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in truck or heavy equipment repair
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered

 

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment testing, which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) check, background check, drug screen, and physical capabilities test.
  • Must possess a valid Class “R” Driver’s License upon appointment

 

Post-Employment Requirements:

  • The position is deemed essential, and incumbents must be available for winter storm and other emergency events and available to work on an on-call on a rotation basis which requires evening, holidays and weekends.
  • Work locations and facilities are subject to change based on business needs.
  • Must complete and maintain five ASE certifications throughout employment. ASE Air Conditioning Certification, ASE Suspension & Steering Certification, ASE Electrical/ Electronic Systems Certification, and ASE T4 Medium/ Heavy Truck Brake Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment. A fifth ASE certification must be obtained within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Heavy Equipment Mechanics only - Possession of a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within twelve (24) months of appointment. HAZMAT endorsement is highly desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Position may require work to be performed in the field as well as the shop, thus exposing incumbents to all weather conditions, fumes, smoke, and high noise levels and potentially dangerous working conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position.

  • Spends a majority of the time, either walking or standing while in the shop or field.
  • Lifts carries, pushes and pulls up to 75 lbs. while performing mechanical functions in the shop and field.
  • May be required to frequently lift heavy and awkward objects, up to 75 lbs, from ground level to waist level or higher, either on solid ground or while balancing (Ex. on a ladder).
  • Occasionally balances, stoops, crouches, and kneels while performing duties in the shop and field.
  • Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the two-way radio.
  • Auditory capacity to endure long-term exposure to loud noises.
  • Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination while using tools and machinery.
  • Physical capacity to safely operate County vehicles and machinery.
  • Visual requirements:
    • Far Acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more
    • Near Acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less
    • Depth Perception: the ability to judge distance and space relationships
    • Field of Vision: ability to see peripherally
    • Accommodation: ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus
    • Color Vision: the ability to distinguish and identify different colors
