Primary working hours are Monday through Friday with varied shifts depending on business needs.  Shifts are a combination of days, evenings and nights.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Performs a variety of supervisory, technical and administrative duties associated with cleaning and minor maintenance tasks in and around County facilities.

DUTIES:

  • Performs a variety of supervisory duties associated with the cleaning of County buildings by day and night shift employees and selected contractors. Inspects and evaluates the day-to-day efforts to keep assigned County facilities clean, safe and comfortable for occupants and visitors, correcting discrepancies when discovered.
  • Supervises employees engaged in the general cleaning and upkeep (minor maintenance) of facilities to include: sweeping, moping, vacuuming and buffing floors; dusting and polishing surfaces; cleaning restrooms to include mirrors, toilets, stalls, showers and sinks, ensuring that soap, hand towels, toilet paper, etc. are stocked as necessary; emptying ashtrays, washing windows and other surfaces; replacing light bulbs; moving boxes and furniture items; sweeping and washing down sidewalks and removing snow on sidewalk entrances; putting up or taking down flags; unloading and storing supplies. May be called upon to perform these same duties when necessary.
  • Monitors and enforces a safe work environment for employees and visitors alike.
  • Trains staff to perform essential functions of the Custodian and when the use of new techniques, equipment or cleaning materials is required. Prepares and conducts training on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and County safety requirements.
  • Schedules and assigns work to staff and prioritizes work requests.
  • Performs periodic performance appraisals and documents those appraisals on specified forms.
  • Participates at a high level in the selection of new employees, making hiring recommendations to the Custodial Manager.
  • Places employees on administrative leave when necessary due to safety and security issues. Makes recommendations for disciplinary actions up to and including termination of employment.
  • Receives and evaluates leave requests from staff to ensure optimal availability of sufficient staff to accomplish required tasks. Approves and disapproves leave requests after briefing the Custodial Manager.
  • Determines the appropriate amounts of supplies and equipment required for each shift and submits orders for approval in sufficient time to ensure adequate stock.
  • Monitors and ensures the security and integrity of facilities to prevent theft and unlawful entry.

REQUIREMENTS:

Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

  • Ability to supervisor and direct the work of subordinate employees.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English language, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks assigned to this position.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, fellow co-workers, contractors and the public.
  • Ability to operate and train others on the proper operation of floor buffer and other mechanized cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to learn layouts of Arapahoe County facilities.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in order to travel between assigned buildings.
  • Ability to plan and implement a comprehensive custodial services program.
  • Ability to prepare effective and efficient reports to management.
  • Knowledge of housekeeping methods and practices, safety precautions and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Knowledge of custodial products and uses.
  • Must be familiar with SDS.

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Some technical school, college credit or specialized custodial training is preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a custodian in a public or non-profit environment or equivalent related experience. At least two (2) years as a lead custodian or custodial team leader is preferred.
  • (An equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job may be sufficient).

 

Supplemental Information:

  • This position requires successful completion of pre-employment background and motor vehicle checks and drug screen.
  • Possession of a valid Class “R” Colorado driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within two (2) weeks of appointment.
  • Will also require post-hire fingerprinting, a CBI background check and successfully completing bi-annual Colorado Justice Information System (CJIS) training.
  • Must maintain a good driving record in accordance with Arapahoe County Risk Management Guidelines.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends as business needs dictate.
  • Work locations and facilities are subject to change based on business need.
  • Position is deemed essential and incumbents must be available for winter storm emergencies and to respond to emergency phone calls all of which may require evenings, holidays and weekends.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with exposure to dust, grease, chemicals, fumes, chemical cleaners, etc. Hazards present in this position are inherent in custodial occupational areas.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position.

  • Operate a 120 lb. Equipment requiring pushing, pulling and occasional lifting.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 50 lbs.
  • May be required to lift heavy and awkward objects, up to 50 lbs., from ground level to waist level or higher, either on solid ground, or while balancing (e.x. on a ladder).
  • Constantly stands, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing office or work duties.
  • Constantly lifting trash bags, wash buckets, boxes, chairs, tables, etc. which may be heavy, bulky or awkward.
  • Verbal and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, etc.
  • Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or custodial equipment.
  • Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work related equipment and machinery.

Must wear provided task appropriate PPE. Occasional exposure to blood borne pathogens, use of various types of cleaning equipment (vacuums, buffers, burnishers, autoscrubbers, pressure washers, etc.), occasional exposure to the cold. Occasional use of hand/power tools. 

Definitions:

  • Occasionally: Activity exists less than 1/3 of the time.
  • Frequently: Activity exists between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.
  • Constantly: Activity exists more than 2/3 of the time.
